About the program
The Vet Ready story (open this for candidates and visitors)
What Vet Ready is. New grads are expected to jump from learning and observing straight into practicing medicine. Vet Ready closes that gap. Interns see their own appointments, treat incoming emergencies, and manage hospitalized patients, with staff doctors there to supervise and support every step.
It is geared toward veterinary students and new veterinarians interested in general practice or emergency medicine. Students come through the externship; new graduates through the internship.
The internship year
- Starts with a 6-week orientation covering every area of the hospital, with 25+ hours of continuing education.
- Then 15 shifts a month across general practice, urgent care, true emergencies, and hospitalized patients.
- Appointments start at 1 hour and work down to 30 minutes by month 4 to 6.
- Progressive surgical responsibility: assist first, then primary surgeon on procedures like exploratory laparotomies, splenectomies, cystotomies, and wound management.
- Each intern is paired with a professional mentor (monthly meetings), plus quarterly check-ins and biannual reviews. 30+ doctors across the practice teach.
Training and curriculum
- Dedicated VetReady online learning platform combined with hands-on floor time.
- Daily hospital modules (1 to 2 hours) plus about 2 hours of guided CE matched to each week's subject.
- Fear Free and RECOVER certifications are built into the curriculum.
- Weekly topic rounds, intermittent specialist rounds, and wet labs.
Externships for vet students
- Open to 1st through 4th year students for 1 to 4 week stays.
- Free housing (pending availability) and a weekly stipend for clinical-year externs.
- Rotations through general practice, emergency, hospitalization, and surgery, plus mentee rounds, rescue surgery days, and wet labs.
The Wolf Trap partnership
- Every intern spends one month at Wolf Trap Animal Rescue in Merrifield learning high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter under Dr. Amber Burton.
- A hybrid track splits the year: 6 months at Columbia Pike, 6 months at Wolf Trap, with 600+ surgeries under direct mentorship.
Benefits and support
- Competitive wage, 401(k), generous PTO, and free intern housing in a quiet nearby neighborhood.
- AVMA dues, AVMA PLIT, Virginia license, and DEA license fees covered.
- Health, dental, and vision plans, a mental health support program, uniform allowance, and the employee pet care discount.

The practice behind it. Vet Ready is backed by a family-owned practice, not a corporate group. Columbia Pike has grown from a one-doctor practice into a 24+ doctor, 24-hour GP and emergency hospital, and the Hall family company has served Northern Virginia for over 50 years.
